- Gather necessary documentation: Ensure you have all required documents, including your Letter of Offer, academic transcripts, certificates, passport, several passport-sized photos and identification papers. It’s advisable to keep original copies and a few sets of attested photocopies of important documents. If your documents are not in English, get an official notarised translation done.
- Apply for student’s pass: While some institutions have this step covered, others may require you to apply for the Student’s Pass on your own. See the Immigration Checkpoints Authority (ICA)’s webpage for details on how to apply, and where to apply.
- Prepare your passport: Ensure your passport has at least six months of validity remaining. Renew your passport immediately if your passport expires within six months.
- Receive IPA letter: Before you leave for Singapore, make sure you receive the In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter from the ICA. This letter is provided when your student visa to Singapore has been conditionally approved, and you can travel to Singapore to complete the application process and receive your Student’s Pass. Remember that possessing an IPA letter does not necessarily guarantee entry into Singapore, as you will still need to fulfil all entry requirements set by the ICA.
- Complete all conditions listed on IPA: Besides applying for a Student’s pass, you must, within a specified timeframe (usually 30 days) after arrival, complete all the conditions listed in the IPA to receive your student visa. This can also include a medical check-up or security deposit.
- Arrange accommodation: Secure your accommodation for at least the first few months before arriving in Singapore. You might need a confirmation email or letter stating your place of stay when you apply for a study visa.
- Financial planning: Plan your finances carefully. Singapore has gone mostly cashless, with many places accepting different forms of mobile payments like GrabPay, AliPay, WeChat Pay, and more. However, you should still plan to carry enough Singapore dollars to last you for the initial few weeks, at least until you open a local bank account.
