Entrepreneurship is a popular topic nowadays. With all the talk about the future of work, more and more individuals are starting to turn to entrepreneurship to build their own lives and businesses. This drives the question: how do you improve as an entrepreneur?
From networking to entrepreneurship courses, here are five ways to improve and own each day like an entrepreneur.
1. Attend entrepreneurial events
In order to get better at what you do, place yourself in an environment that encourages you. Surround yourself with like-minded entrepreneurs at conferences, webinars, and any event that you can attend. Remember, the goal is not to pitch or to make a sale. It’s to network as much as possible. You will get that extra boost from being amongst people who will lift each other higher.
2. Follow mentors
With technological advancements, looking for a mentor is now easier than ever. On networking sites like LinkedIn, you can follow people whose advice are helpful to you, or connect with them with a simple click. With Zoom and other video conferencing tools, physical location is less of an obstacle when reaching out. Of course, this will vary from person to person. (Also, it’s important to remember to take time differences into consideration when scheduling a meeting!)
3. Learn how to set goals
If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Every entrepreneur must learn how to set goals effectively. No, we are not referring to KPIs. (In fact, there is an argument against bringing KPIs into any entrepreneurship thinking.) However, there is a need to set goals. Many people buckle at the thought of setting goals. The truth is, they can be both small and big. Small goals can simply look like the three important tasks that you’ll need to complete each and every day. If we’re talking about a bigger goal, then it is important to break them down into smaller, more actionable goals that you can complete every single day by showing up.
4. Prioritise learning
We are never completely ready for something; neither are we motivated to learn 100% of the time. Only when we start doing something can we improve at that task. Learning occurs along the way. In order to improve as an entrepreneur, it is important to always focus on learning what you need to improve on at the moment. Starting a design business? Focus on your product, and focus on learning how to keep your books in order.
Of course, learning by ourselves is not an easy task, which is why it is also important to…
5. Take an entrepreneurship course
Research has shown that getting an entrepreneurship education and taking entrepreneurship courses improve what researchers call “entrepreneurial intention”. This is a person’s intention to act like an entrepreneur. It does not only refer to creating a new business, but also means coming up with new ideas. Regardless of whether you are looking to start your own business, your intention to always come up with new ideas can positively impact all aspects of your life. If you’re looking to improve yourself by thinking like an entrepreneur, take an entrepreneurship course!
